30. The same amount of heat energy is added to equal masses of lead, iron, basalt and water at room temperature. Assuming no phase change takes place, which substance will have the smallest change in temperature?

A) Lead

B) Water

C) Basalt

D) Iron

Correct Answer: Option B – Water

Water has a very high specific heat capacity, which makes the change in temperature of water comparatively small as against lead, basalt and iron.

  • The specific heat of water is 1 calorie/gram °C = 4.186 joule/gram °C
  • The specific heat of iron is 0.108 Kilo Calories/Kg °C
  • The specific heat of lead is 0.031 Kilo Calories/Kg °C
  • The specific heat of basalt is 0.84 Kilo Joules/Kg K

Hence, options A, C and D are incorrect.
